E. Larry Day and his company, Chimera Studios Special Make-up Effects, have been practicing “The Creation of Imagination” since 1974.  E. Larry’s interest in Make-up was originally nurtured by legendary Make-up Artist Dick Smith (“Godfather,” “Little Big Man,” “The Exorcist”),  Day landed his first Key Make-Up/Special Make-Up Effects position at the age of 17 on the Scott Forslund film “Small Windows” in 1977 after being ‘discovered’ in a small make-up supply house in his hometown of Portland, Oregon.  He has expanded his services over the years to encompass over 50 Feature-length productions, hundreds of commercials and numerous celebrities including; George Clooney, Heather Locklear, Kate Hudson, Kirsten Dunst, Gary Busey, Gabrielle Union, & Rosanna Arquette.   He is best known for his detailed and precise make-ups and intricate character make-ups.

E. Larry Day received initial training through various stage venues including the Portland Opera Association and one of his first teachers, Vivian Lyman.  By learning the nuaunces of stage make-up from a theatre master, he was able to later translate subtle variances of shadow and light to all forms of make-up, especially delicate beauty and character work.  Regional make-up artists Bob Griggs and Russ Fast, as well as several local actors embraced him and his work and provided the basic techniques of film and television make-up, but the true mentor for much of his early work is the renowned Make-Up Artist Dick SmithE. Larry first approached Smith in 1978 by mail (his address was coerced from a telephone operator)Dick Smith called E. Larry and gave him what was to be the beginning of a wealth of knowledge about the technical/artistic side of make-up.  Later, E. Larry would be one of the first students accepted into Smith’s Advanced Professional Make-Up CourseDay remembers Dick’s advice on a make-up that went terribly wrong:

“I sent Dick some photos of an 8-piece foam latex prosthetic aging make-up I had done.  I knew the work was fundamentally flawed and wanted to get his advice on it.  Dick called back and asked me to tell him how I would describe this elaborate make-up.  I wanted to impress him with my knowledge, so I said, “The face is a canvas…, and I’m creating my art on that canvas.”   After a pause, he said,”…, Wrong!...,  The face is a finished painting!  Make-up is only the enhancement needed for the desired character.  It is not how much make-up to add, but how little will create what is necessary that final effect.  This amazing insight changed my vision of make-up artistry forever.”

The first professional makeup artist E. Larry Day would come in personal contact with was award-winning Ken Chase (“The Color Purple,” “Back To The Future,” “Helter Skelter”).  According to E. Larry;

Kenny was working on a Movie-Of-The-Week titled ‘The Possessed’ that was shooting at a local college in Portland .  The show starred James Farentino, Joan Hacket, Diana Scarwid, and a then unknown actor, Harrison Ford.  I took all of my crappy rubber masks and makeup photos to the set and just ‘hoped’ I could meet him.    To my surprise, Chase was not only receptive, but very nurturing.  His only negative comments were that my sculptures were ‘too perfect. (asymetrical)’  He said, ‘Life is not so perfect, you must sculpt some imperfections to make the work look realistic!.’”

That ability to create natural-looking imperfections is one of the most important elements found in E. Larry Day’s make-ups to this day.

During the 1980’s, Chimera Studios Special Make-up Effects Company was formed with great assistance from film producer Robert Furlong (“Confessions of a Hitman,” “Hell’s Kitchen N.Y.C.”).  Originally, the company was setup to be a clearing house for talented local sculptors, mold makers, painters, and make-up artists, but the reputation of Day’s work quickly spread through the industry and a diverse myriad of jobs ran through the shop including; mascot costumes, medical prototyping, mass-produced Halloween masks, inventor research & development, as well as straight and beauty make-up for hundreds of industrial, commercial and feature projects.  Chimera Studios combined the talents of over 30 artists of various mediums, and assembled them to form the perfect ‘team’ for any job, no matter how extreme.

In the mid 1980’s, E. Larry Day would meet a Make-Up artist that would forever change his career path.  On the film “The Penalty Phase” directed by Tony Richardson (“Peter Strauss,” Jonelle Allen,” Melissa Gilbert”), he would assist Master Make-up Artist Del Acevedo (“Patton,” “The Deer Hunter,“The Poseidon Adventure”).  Del generously gave to E. Larry his extensive knowledge of the day-to-day work of a professional Film and Television Make-up Artist.  His expertise as a Department Head and Key Make-up Artist remains an inspiration to this day.

For the past two decades, E. Larry Day has perfected his skills at Make-up Artistry and completed over 60 films, tv-series and videos including “Mean Creek,” “What the Bleep do we Know?,” “Dead By Sunset,” “Dr. Giggles,” “The Ring II,” “The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer,” “Halloweentown,” “Fifteen & Pregnant,” “Chrome Soldiers,” “Wee Sing” Children’s video series, and the recent features “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon,” “The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang,” and the Hallmark Hall-of-Fame movie “The Valley of Light.”

He has served under such noted Directors/Producers as Tony Richardson, Craig Anderson, Kevin Hooks, Robert Lieberman, Robert M. Rolsky, Arvin Brown, Gideon Amir, Tani Cohen, E.W. Swackhamer, Gigi Pritzker, Craig R. Baxley, Rick Rosenthal, Thomas J. Wright, David Latt, Thomas H. Brodek, and Arthur Allan Seidelman

He has been the Key Make-Up Artist for films that starred George Clooney, Kirsten Dunst, Roddy McDowall, Sela Ward, Rick Schroder, Robby Benson, Heather Locklear, Gary Busey, Annette O'Toole, Lauren Holly, Cicely Tyson, Ned Beatty, Robert Englund, Rebecca De Mornay, Ellen Burstyn, Bruce Greenwood, Wendie Malick, Seymour Cassel, Marlee Matlin, Alan Arkin, Brendan Fraser, Keith Carradine, Paul Simon, Ron Silver, Regina King, Melissa Gilbert, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Michael McKean, Chris O’Donnell, John Savage, Gabrielle Union, Kate Hudson, Rosanna Arquette, Eric McCormack, Chris Klein, and Erika Christensen.

According to E. Larry, “My actors are my references…, just give them a call.”

E. Larry Day currently has residences in Los Angeles , California and the small town of Rockaway Beach , Oregon , where he maintains Chimera Studios Special Make-up Effects, producing character make-up effects and specialty props.

His greatest passion remains the opportunity to collaborate with producers, directors and actors on unique character projects.
